I enjoyed reading this extract by Jurgen Habermas, which highlighted the topic of modernity verses post modernity. It is such a discussed issue for many reasons so it is always interesting to read about and I enjoyed. Reading about controversial topics is also engaging as it makes you think more about what your views and opinions are.
In this article it is said that due to the less abstract and more functional influences, postmodernity is a closer link to Pre-modernity than it is to modernism. I agree with this as I see modernism as a movement that puts form over function. The extract picks up on the fact that in this modern day, people are keen to satisfy everyone. I don’t think it is possible to do everything and please everyone at the same time, it is better to focus on one or two things and make them great.
This is a struggle for designers today, with the abundance of technologies, materials and opportunity with the combination of balancing function, aesthetics and historical content there is so much choice and so many people to please that design can become conflicted.
Although other issues were discussed, this is what steered my attention the most. I enjoy postmodern architecture but I can see why some people may be conflicted. These reasons don’t have to relate to the movement but more of the era we live in today.
