Garden Cities of To-Morrow, Sir Ebenezer Howard was published in 1902. He wrote the book to explain and discuss the problems that London was facing and the solution that he had come up with a few years previously. A method of urban planning, (Garden City Movement).
I initially found this reading intriguing as I live in central London. I was curious to the issues that were arising at that time and to the solutions and whether they were relatable to the home I live in currently.
London was facing severe over crowding which would not benefit from just expanding the scale of the city. He needed the dense population to disperse and just by expanding the city, there would be no attraction to move out. He needed a reason or a benefit that was the method introduced. To create communities which were surrounded by fields and gardens but that still had the urban planning concept of having a residential, agricultural and industrial ratio.
Letchworth and Welwyn were both garden cities that were built under the guidance of Howard. They are still here today, popular and vibrant suburbs, which in my opinion prove that his method was a benefit to the urban population in London. The urban planning method has had an influence on urban planning nationwide and has helped us to structure and improve our living standards. I believe that we have a lot to thank Sir Ebenezer Howard for.
As I mentioned earlier I was interested in this reading initially due to my connection with London and urban living. I have also found the Garden Cities of Tomorrow a beneficial read as I feel that we should be aware of our surrounding environment when designing. The impacts the surrounding area can have on a building and the community around could influence a building and design should acknowledge and reflect on this so people have a better environment to live in.
