I was excited to do further research and look at the suggested reading after the lecture featuring Mies van der Rohe.
Regarding the Barcelona Pavilion, which is introduced at the beginning of the reading, we are informed about how many different ways the building has been interpreted. De Stijl and Modernism were both great influences as well as the link with the Bauhaus. Bringing the arts together with architecture and his work we can see the strong link between all these movements and why the pavilion in particular is often referred to as ‘iconic’.
The building appears so simple and easy but from reading I found that so much detail and planning when into creating this design. I can understand the strong links with the modernist movement. The contrast between symmetry and asymmetry in the space and the way the space has been created to direct people almost creating a journey is effortless and inspiring.
I definitely agree with the statement that the internal spaces are ‘symbolic’ and that they hold such power. This is due to the interest and captivation that draw. The materials used internally are a strong factor of this as they are an addition to the idea of symmetry depending on where you were standing in the pavilion. I think that the materials, including one of the most rare marbles, was chosen with such precision and really completed the building aesthetically.
