I found the radio broadcasting an excellent way to look at the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I had previously read about his work but I found listening to the broadcast a more beneficial way to learn, as it was easier to understand and take in the information given than reading an article, as the way the speakers engaged in discussion was easy to follow. As I listened I looked through images of his work, which emphasized and highlighted the main themes. One of the main points, which stood out to me was the description of Wright as the ‘Great Master’ of architecture. The main theme centered on the ideology of Wright connecting with the surrounding environment and the outside world. The quote "Let us mimic no more, if we build in the desert, let the house know the desert" describes the thinking of Wright and how the architecture should become the site, be organic and "of the land" itself. It makes me want to become more aware of the exterior and outdoor environment whether that is rural or urban in my own work. Whether it is relevant, I should consider and look into how it will influence my design.
As one of the most influential architects and an early modernist of the of the 19th century, Wright is said to never have underestimated his own work.
Out of all his work, Falling water is the building that I enjoy the most. I used the building at a placement interview as one of my favorite pieces of architecture due to the way that Wright managed to use the surrounding features to create a piece of architecture that appeared to be floating and part of the waterfall itself. There is a horizontal theme, which emerges in a lot of his work. The building merges with the outdoors with the integration of the nature around, the rocks and trees that appear to infiltrate the building. At different times of the year, in different seasons the setting is different. I feel that the materials used within the exterior and interior of the building subtly reflects this and allows it to merge with its surrounding whatever the weather.
Overall, the broadcast has allowed me to think about Wright's work in a whole new way. This has also allowed me to think more carefully about the ways in which architecture can be interpreted, such as natural and organic forms, and I hope to be able develop my own ideas that would allow my work to stand out from the rest.
People learn and work in different ways but in the future, when researching other architects I will listen to more broadcasts and watch documentaries. I feel that this will benefit my understanding and has made me realise how I am able to work best.
