Leach, Neil (ed.), Rethinking Architecture: A Reader in Cultural Theory. London: Routledge (1997) [electronic resource] “Jacques Derrida, Architecture Where the Desire May Live (Interview)". (pp.317- 323)
Rethinking architecture, an expression that could have so many different interpretations. My understanding is that architects wanted to move architecture forward and into the future.
Despite the controversy and disputes that followed the modernist movement, Otto Wagner was still seen as the father of the movement. I naturally find the modernist movement intriguing as it is such a strong style and has influenced so much of the architecture we have to date. However, In my opinion the essay was difficult to follow and understand despite my interest in the topic.
The essay talks about Peter Eisenman, an architect who aimed to create his own unique designs that were not influenced by anything other than himself. From my understanding, the author does not believe that this is the case. Personally I believe that people are always influenced by something, unintentionally by a movement, history or their surroundings for example. The experiences they have in life that have made them who they are, are an influence on their own. I don’t believe that this does not make their work unique or original.
