Art Nouveau is a movement that is expressed not just through architecture but also through other means, such as art. I have always enjoyed looking at Art Nouveau, I think this originally stems from my interest in art and the research I began doing as part of my art GCSE, A-Level and Foundation courses before I started becoming more interested in architecture. I found this text engaging and informative.
The movement can be seen all around Great Britain but originally travelled from Belgium and France. Its origin is widely recognized as the style was such an influential movement, even if it not reflected in designs we see today. Modern architects often have the view that less is more and therefore the highly decorative and intricate style of Art Nouveau are not often shown in modern architecture.
Victor Horta is one of the prime examples of an architect who designed his buildings in the Art Nouveau style. His personal home has a very interesting façade which highlights the natural forms and intricate design work featured in the style.
Another designer that inspired many is Van de Velde. I had not originally heard as much about him but after reading I found that he was one of the most influential designers in the Art Nouveau Style in Great Britain. Following the natural curves, linear forms and intricate detail Velde was a furniture designer that produced complex, decorative and leading pieces.
